Doris Emily Hammer, 90, formerly of Polo, passed away Monday, January 8, 2018, at the Apostolic Christian Home Eureka.
Doris was born on May 27, 1927, in a farm house outside of Amboy, IL, the daughter of Emil Heye and Matilda Rose Marie (Schulte) Flessner. She was a 1945 graduate of Amboy High School. On August 2, 1947, she married John Austin Frayser in Dixon, IL. He died March 15, 1975. She then married Maynard Hammer on February 6, 1986 in Polo, IL. He died on February 5, 2017, one day before their 31st wedding anniversary.
Doris and John owned and operated Polo Dry Cleaners from the 1950s until his death. The Polo National Bank then offered Doris a position of bank teller where she worked until her retirement on December 31, 1992. She was a long-time member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Polo. Doris was a member of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary, served as an election judge, was an excellent cook, participated in several card clubs, traveled to many U.S. States as well as Norway and Mexico, enjoyed watching the Chicago Cubs, and watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow.
Survivors include her daughter, Pamela (Eric) Kuchenmeister, Hudson, IL: stepdaughter, Beth (Bix Morgan) Hammer, Oregon, WI; stepsons, John (Debbie) Hammer, Peach Tree Corners, GA and Steve (Lila) Hammer, North Manchester, IN; sister, Rosa Joyce, Neoga, IL; grandchildren, Erica (David) Steffen of Congerville, IL; Hanna Kuchenmeister of Hudson, IL; Liz (Eric) Wester, Johns Creek, GA; Andy Hammer, Wilmore, KY; Jim and Ben Morgan of Oregon, WI; and great-grandchildren, Josiah, Jonan, and Emily Steffen and Alicia Wester.
Besides her parents and husbands, Doris was preceded in death by her sisters Luella Steiner and Evelyn Rhodes, and brother Douglas Flessner.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 201 N. Division Avenue, Polo, IL with Pastor Terrie Wilder officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the funeral from 10-11 a.m. at the church. There will be a private family burial.
