Robert G. Cheatham, 92, of Polo died Friday, March 6, 2015 at the Polo Rehab Health Care Center.
He was born in Odell, Illinois on August 28, 1922 to Harve and Alma (Horn) Cheatham. He grew up in Ottawa, IL and graduated from Ottawa High School in 1940. He entered the US Navy in 1942 and became a Naval Aviator. He fought in the Pacific Theatre during World War II as a pilot flying F6F fighters off the carrier, USS Randolph.
Robert married Cora Jean Weiler in 1946 and celebrated their 60th anniversary in 2006 with family and friends.
Robert graduated from the University of Wisconsin in Madison with a Bachelor’s of Science degree. After graduation, Robert managed Patterson Lumber Co. in Franklin Grove and Marengo, IL.
In 1960 Robert bought Farmer’s Lumber and Supply Co. in Polo, IL and served as President of the company as well as starting the Cedar Forest Products Co. He sold the business in 1988 and retired.
Robert served as President of the Illinois Lumber Materials Dealers Association in 1979 and 1980 as well as a Member of the Board of Directors for 10 years. He became a Master Mason in 1951 in Freeport, IL, member of the Freeport Consistory. Robert was a member of Tebala Shrine, Rockford and served as Director of the Arabic Patrol, a shrine marching unit for 17 years. Serving over 50 years, Robert was a member of the Polo Lions Club. Robert was also a member of Faith United Methodist Church.
Survivors include daughter, Nancy (John) Malburg, son Craig (Julie) Cheatham and four grandchildren, Susan (Gabe) Wassmer, Julie (Tom) Girardin, Terah Cheatham, and Drew Cheatham, and one great grandson; sister Dorothy (Bob) Newman. He was preceded in death by his wife Jean in March 2008, and sister Betty (John) Leamy.
Visitation will be 10:00-11:00 AM on Tuesday, March 10 at Polo Family Funeral Home, 110 E. Dixon, St., Polo, with services immediately following. Burial will be in Fairmont Cemetery. A memorial has been established to Polo Rehab and Health Care Center and the Polo Lions Club.
