Carol E. Hammer

Carol E. Hammer, 77, of Polo, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2016, at KSB Hospital in Dixon. Carol was born March 6, 1938, in Dixon, the daughter of Max and Audrey (Gayman) Plum. On March 8,1958, in Polo, she was united in marriage to William “Bill” Hammer.  Carol was a lifetime member of the Polo Church of the Brethren and the Presbyterian Church, Polo, until the church closed.  She played the piano and organ for both of the churches for many years.  Carol volunteered with Second Hand Rose in Polo, worked with Camp Emmaus in Mt. Morris and also worked for Daws Drug in Polo, until the store closed.  She enjoyed traveling with Bill, making the trips to see their great-grandchildren in Arizona and Virginia.  Her family and friends knew her fondly as “Dado”.  Dado held Sunday dinners on the Farm giving her quality time with her family.  

Survivors include husband Bill; daughters Mary (William Bacilek) Mitchell of Rockford and Linda Hammer of Gilbert, AZ; sister Kathi (Don) Heller of Byron; brother-in-law Paul Schmidt of Polo; grandchildren and great-grandchildren Courtney (Matthew) Richardson daughter Jordan of Dixon, Christopher (Wendy) Mitchell with daughter Chloe and son Elijah of Polo, Kaitlin (Thomas) Thompson with daughter Mackenzie and son Xavier of Newport News, VA (both serving in the Navy), Kaily (fiance Patrick Zazeuta) Barnes with son Pryce of Phoenix, AZ, Elgin Thomas of San Francisco, CA; Nieces and Nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son James Hammer, sister Judy Bocker, sister-in-law Fern Schmidt, niece Carly Jo Heller.

A viewing will be Monday, February 15, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. till service time of 10:30 a.m. at the Polo Church of the Brethren, 401 S. Congress with a private burial following at Fairmount Cemetery, Polo.   

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Camp Emmaus, PO Box 128, Mt. Morris, 61054 or the Polo Church of the Brethren.
