Polo – Douglas E. Smith, 83 of Polo, passed away Wednesday May 5, 2021, at his home surrounded by family.

Doug was born August 22, 1937, in Winthrop, IA, the son of Gene and Margaret Smith. He served in the US Army from 1955 to 1957. He married Ms. Grace Buegel on June 9, 1962 in Dekalb. Doug worked 30 years in retail for Woolworths. He later moved his family to Polo to start his own business Smith’s Variety a five and dime store. He then worked for and retired from Dixon Correctional Center where he was a correctional officer. He was known for his incredible work ethic and dedication to his family and friends. He will be remembered as a kind man who loved to tell a story, make people laugh and share a kind word.

Survivors include his daughter Amy Smith of Chicago; sons, Brian (Molly) Smith Lake Geneva, WI and Bret (Julie) Smith of Waukesha, WI; brother Frank (Audrey) Smith; grandchildren, Jenna (Blake), Heather, Abby (Brandon), Margaret and Kalen Smith.

He was preceded in death by wife Grace.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Polo Family Funeral Home, 110 E. Dixon St., Rosary will be following at 6:00 p.m. Due to covid restrictions a private family service will be held with burial at St. Mary Cemetery in Polo.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to St. Mary Church in Polo or the Polo Area Senior Center.
